Haran is a traditional folk theatre form performed during the Lohri festival. Performed by the Dogra community, it is mostly seen in hilly regions of Jammu, especially Duggar Pradesh. The term Haran is derived from the Hindi word Hiran, i.e., deer. The group that performs Haran comprises of 10-15 members who play different characters and amuse the spectators while delivering important messages on social and political evils. Two artists act as Hiran who are decorated like a beautiful deers with Ghungrus tied to their feet. Two anchors perform as Lamberdar and Chowkidar, whereas others support them in the roles of old women, Narad, Sadhu, Patwari, Gujjar, Gujjari, Maskhara etc. The characters may change depending upon the situations.
