Born in 1797, Emily was an English poet, novelist and dedicated artist. She accompanied her brother, George - Lord Auckland (1784-1849) to India where he served as Governor-General from 1835-1842. Emily Eden captured the fl ora, fauna and ethnic features of Indian people in a large number of lithographs.
This lithograph shows a young Rana seated with his eyes directed away from the onlooker. The posture attributes authority to his form. A sword is appropriately positioned in his hands, the ends of which rest on his legs. A bow along with the sword is also seen with a pointed tail. Dressed in traditional Indian attire, his white choga complements the dark pyjama. The composition is minimal in its background with his seat shown through fi ne brush strokes.
