The treatment of the watercolours in refi ned tones of brown and black highlight the masterstrokes of the artist. Amidst a fl at background, the form of the sepoy commands authority which is furthermore highlighted by the posture in which he is represented. Standing in profi le , his hands resting on the waist and eyes stand in a straight line. The authoritative posture is further highlighted by his right leg with his knee bent in forward motion.
The sepoy is in khaki uniform with knee length breeches. A long sword is aptly fi xed with his waistbelt which elevates the angular vision of the painting. The facial rendition of the sepoy is highlighted in the painting with his sharp nose and moustache portrayed in an upward turn. Careful strokes provide necessary detailing to the eyes which accentuate the naturalistic feel of this composition. To provide emphasis to the form of sepoy, rough brush strokes in green colour show the grass below the sepoy’s feet.
