The careful handling of the medium of watercolour and the signature style of Luker Junior can be seen in the characteristic brushstrokes and naturalistic treatment.
The sepoy is represented in a profi le view, holding a double barrel gun in his hands which is rested on his shoulder. With striped knee breaches, attention is also drawn to his shoes, below which streaks of grass fi nd their rendition. The fl at background and angular face of the sepoy highlights the skilful rendition by the artist. Amidst the tonal variations of brown and black, a streak of brightness is visible in the painting by the yellow tassel of the cap worn by the sepoy with his khaki uniform.
