Procession (detail), Tomasso Colonnello, Oil on Canvas

Taking inspiration from the central painting, meandering floral motifs were extended throughout by a team of twelve Indian painters working under Tomasso Colonnello’s supervision. The painting was done directly on the ceiling with oil colours. A variety of animals entwined within floral motifs, creepers and arabesques occupy the rest of the ceiling. Paintings were also executed on canvas and the prepared canvas was then pasted on top of the four walls.

The paintings on the walls show a royal procession with a King and Queen seated in their carriage along with their entourage. Horses and camels with ornamental harnesses precede these triumphal dignitaries. All the forms are seen in forward movement which highlight the skill of the artists in portraying the details.

While crossing diverse regions with architectural elements in the background, the paintings draw attention to white lions, tigers and leopards pouncing on antelopes as well as scenes of hunting, feasting and repose. Intricate floral patterned borders provide additional embellishment. The paintings reflect the magnificence of Persian Royal procession.
