VENU in South India

Material: Bamboo

A reedless wind instrument made from a single hollow shaft of bamboo. The South Indian style of flute has 8 holes. One end of the instrument is closed to provide a blowing hole at the closed end. The notes produced by the flute are controlled by adjusting the distance between the finger hole and the mouth hole. The sound quality of the flute depends on the type of bamboo it is made from. Some of the best flutes are made from the bamboo grown in the Nagercoil region of South India.
