PILLAGOVI in South India

Material: Bamboo

Also known as Murali, the Pillagovi is made of bamboo, and traditionally believed to have been invented by Lord Krishna, who is usually represented by holding it or playing it. The name Bansuri is sometimes given to this instrument. The tone is low and sweet, and the instrument is invariably played softly; indeed, notes of a piercing character could not be produced upon it. It is quite a pastoral instrument and is much used by shepherds and cowherds. Many of the simple melodies of the country, when played upon this instrument, have a wonderful charm.
