TAPPU in Kerala

Material: Metal, Goat Skin

It is the same as Khanjira but the size may be a bit bigger and goatskin may be fixed in place of lizard skin. The frame is held in one hand and played with the other. Muslims are seen using it for some of their folk singing like Arbana Muttu, by mendicants, etc. A bigger instrument with a much wider frame and thicker skin is found with the same name. This is beaten with a stick and emits a fairly big sound. In some cases, the barrel is made of metal (usually discarded paint or varnish drums). In Trichur district this is known as Cetti Vadyam, the Konkani speaking Kudumi Cettis (or Moopans) call it Maggoda. It is used for folk festivals like Kavadi Attam, Puli Kali (Onam Tiger), and so on. This is also called Muri Chenda in some localities.
