TAYAMBAKA in Kerala

Material: Wood, Cloth, Leather

A temple instrument, Thayambaka is a two- headed drum. While playing, only one hand has a stick and the other hand is used without any stick(only palm used). The tempo of the instrument begins with a slow pace, eventually reaching a medium and high pace. Apart from temple, this percussion instrument is also played in proscenium stages, open fields or pageantry grounds. Although thayambaka is mostly used in an orchestra performance, it is also used as a solo instrument. It can also be performed in a pair which is called double thayambaka. If three players perform together then it is called triple thayambaka. Moreover, if five players perform together in a row then it is called pancha thayambaka. The pattern in which the player plays the instrument gives scope to ample manodharma(improvisation).
