This is an ancient instrument. The Mayirkkan Murasu is said to have been made out of black wood with leather straps tied fast. The face of the instrument is covered with the skin of a dead bull without the hair being removed from it or with the skin of a female elephant which had vanquished a tiger. It is further anointed with black mud and has a black spot or an “eye”. The instrument is struck with wooden sticks.
