DHUMSA

Type: AVANADDHA VADYA

Dhumsa is a percussion instrument made of wood, metal, iron, and leather. This folk instrument is found in West Bengal and Orissa. Majorly used for rhythmic accompaniment in ‘Seraikella Chhau’ dance of Orissa and ‘Purulia Chhau’ dance of West Bengal.



DHUMSA in West Bengal

Material: Wood, metal, leather

Huge cup shaped hollow wooden body, covered with metal sheets. Drum face covered with thick hide and tied with leather bracing. Played with two sticks and used in ‘Purulia Chhau’ dance of West Bengal.

DHUMSA in Orissa

Material: Parchment, iron

Vessel shaped skin covered hemispherical bowl made of riveted iron sheets. ‘X’ pattern bracing. Placed on the ground or hung around the neck, played with two sticks. Used in ‘Seraikella Chhau’ dance performance for rhythmic accompaniment.
