Description:
The Khol is a musical instrument created by the great socio-religious reformer of Assam, Mahapurush Sankardev. He created this instrument for the purpose of using it in a play composed by him called the Chihnayatra. The egg-shaped body of the Khol, like Mridanga, is traditionally made of clay. However, Khols are also made of wood today. The Sattriya culture can be divided into three prominent schools – Bordowa, Barpeta and Kamalabari. In the case of certain talas in the Sattriya tradition minor variations exist among different schools. For example, while the names of certain talas are same in the three schools, there are differences in their rhythm, structure, division in measurement (taali, khaali, jaati) etc.
