Cave 17
- Siṃhala

Description :

The widest painting occupying the right aisle in Cave 17, is known for its distinct style and structure. Most of the painting is still intact and though the narrative moves in various directions, it is guided primarily by the location of the events. The left portion of the painting and the lower middle section are set on an island and the rest is based on a city-kingdom.

Story:

Siṃhala and other merchant sailors are shipwrecked on an island, home to beautiful women. Once they realise that the women are man-eating rākṣasis, Siṃhala manages to escape from the island and returns to his city. The rākṣasis follow him and wreak havoc in the kingdom by killing the royal family. After Siṃhala is crowned as king, he invades the island to defeat the rākṣasis.
