On the right aisle in Cave 17, there are a group of paintings based on stories of the Bodhisattva in which he is born as an animal. In these narratives, the animals display compassion and kindness towards the world.
Indra arrives disguised as a Brahmin to test a devout hare. When he asks the hare for food, the hare offers its own body. To immortalise this legend, he adorns his palace as well as the moon's surface with the image of the hare.
