General Description

Found at a higher level, Cave 22 is also a Vihāra from the Later period. It has a porch, hall and shrine. The dedicatory inscription in the shrine states that the Buddha image is the gift of a Sakya monk by the name of Dharmadeva.

Shrine

The Buddha’s right hand is in the Abhayamudrā - a gesture of fearlessness that grants divine protection to all. Traces of the painted halo are still visible. The Buddha is seated in Bhadrasana. The Buddha is also surrounded by two bodhisatvas holding chauris or fly-whisks.
