A vihāra at Ajanta from the Early phase, this cave consists of a central astylar hall which is 36 feet 7 inches, with cells on all three sides.
An Early cave, it is the oldest vihāra at Ajanta.
The cells in the cave are provided with stone beds as well as niches in the wall, which probably held the possessions of the monks.
All Early caves were commissioned through collective patronage, individual donative inscriptions are found at the cave. At the back wall, an inscription shows that Merchant Ghanamadada had commissioned the dwelling.
